Making Veterinary Care More Accessible
Our Volunteer Work in Molokaʻi
Making Veterinary Care More Accessible
For Big Island Pet Care Center, caring for pets extends beyond the walls of our practice. Our team travels to Molokaʻi each month, working with Molokaʻi Community Vet Hui to provide veterinary care for pets who may otherwise have limited access to these services. What began as a shared commitment to helping animals has grown into an ongoing mission. With each visit, we’re working toward building sustainable, long-term veterinary support for the Molokaʻi community.
about our clinic –
Big Island pet care center
Dr. Grune, a visionary in the field of veterinary medicine, founded our clinic in 1990. Opening his own practice was the realization of his lifelong dream—to deliver the highest level of care to animals in need.
Through his clinic, Dr. Grune has surpassed his expectations and provided comprehensive and compassionate care for dogs and cats throughout Hawaii. We prioritize client education and have created a comfortable space where pets and parents feel at ease.
Our lovely clinic is located within a retrofitted house. It exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The open-air lanai serves as our waiting room, and the surrounding landscaped grounds provide a serene environment to promote relaxation for your pet.
Our hands-on approach ensures that your furry friends receive personalized attention and care. We genuinely strive for the best for your pet and aim to build lasting relationships with both pets and their devoted owners. Our dedicated veterinarians and staff are here to meet all your pet healthcare needs.
Our Veterinary Services
in Molokaʻi
Our volunteer trips are made possible by members of the Big Island Pet Care Center team who generously donate their own time to serve the community. After caring for patients at our Keaʻau clinic throughout the week, these dedicated pet care professionals travel to Molokaʻi on weekends to provide veterinary services.
We currently visit the island once each month, with services based on the needs of the community and the resources we are able to bring with us. We mostly treat cats and dogs.
Some of the services we offer during visits include:
- Wellness Exams
- Vaccinations
- Preventative Treatments
- Treatment for General Concerns
- Urgent Veterinary Care
- Spays and Neuters
- Sedated Ear Cleanings
- Wound Care and Bandaging
- Enucleation
- Rehabilitation Therapy
- Veterinary Acupuncture
- End-of-Life Care
As our program continues to grow, we’re thoughtfully expanding the services we can offer the Molokaʻi community. Surgeries, for example, require additional resources and coordination, so they are less frequently offered.
Why This Work Matters
Living on an island comes with its challenges, including access to veterinary care. For many pet owners and families on Molokaʻi, traveling to receive veterinary services isn’t always practical or possible.
Our team is committed to bringing care directly to the community. Each monthly trip represents a shared belief that every pet deserves access to quality veterinary medicine, regardless of where they live. We’re honored to work alongside the Molokaʻi Community Vet Hui and grateful for the opportunity to support the pets and people who welcome us each month. Together we can create a healthier future for animals across Molokaʻi.
Help Us Continue Serving Molokaʻi
As this program grows, so do the resources needed to keep it sustainable. One of our current priorities is securing reliable housing for our volunteer team while we’re on Molokaʻi. Having a consistent place to stay allows us to continue making monthly trips while dedicating more time and resources to caring for local pets.
If you’d like to support this mission, you can donate! Thank you for supporting our work and the pets of Molokaʻi.
Sharing our mission also makes an impact. We really appreciate you helping bring awareness to the work happening in Molokaʻi and the importance of accessible veterinary care.
