Dr. Grune
DVM/Owner
Meet the legendary Dr. Grune, a true icon in the Big Island’s pet care scene!
Originally hailing from bustling Honolulu, Hawai’i, Dr. Grune has dedicated his life to serving our beloved furry companions since 1991. With an illustrious career spanning 38 years, Dr. Grune earned his Veterinary degree from Colorado State University and has worked with a dazzling array of animals, including the renowned tiger, Namaste, at Panaewa Zoo.
Beyond his veterinary prowess, Dr. Grune is a man of diverse passions. When he’s not in the clinic, you can find him capturing moments through his lens in photography, casting lines out on the water while fishing, or smashing a few volleys on the pickleball court. His surgical playlists, featuring the soulful tunes of Eric Clapton and Neil Young, are the stuff of local legend.
Dr. Grune’s journey began humbly, operating out of his trusty truck for appointments, lab tests, and even microscope sessions. Through sheer dedication and unwavering commitment, he founded the esteemed Big Island Pet Care Center, a beacon of compassionate care for the Hilo community.
Whether you’re a longtime resident or a newcomer, drop by to meet Dr. Grune and his team. Your fur babies will thank you! Register them today on our website and become part of our extended ohana.
Dr. Ortega
DVM
Ever wondered who’s behind the stethoscope at your vet clinic? Meet Dr Ortega! She’s originally from sunny San Diego and has now proudly served at Big Island Pet Care Center for the past 4 years. She earned her vet degree from the Western University of Health Sciences. When not caring for pets, she enjoys quiet evenings at the cliffs and has a love for snorkeling and crafting mosaic art with her sister. Her craziest patient? A camel, whom she examined for a health certificate. At home, she cherishes moments with Ryder, her 12-year-old kitty.
Dr. Dayton
Dr. Dayton is a dedicated veterinarian based in Lewiston, Idaho. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Resources from the University of Idaho and went on to achieve her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Washington State University.
When she’s not busy performing surgeries, Dr. Dayton enjoys a range of activities including reading, running, yoga, hiking, and exploring tide pools and beaches with her beloved pets. Her furry family consists of three dogs—Boone, Bali, and Benzi—and two cats—Baloney and Beef.
Dr. Dayton’s journey into veterinary medicine began as a technician assistant, where caring for a Doberman with complex medical needs ignited her passion for the field and inspired her pursuit of a DVM.
Dr. Ross
Dr. Ross is a dedicated veterinarian who has journeyed from the Bay Area to Arizona and then to Alaska before finding her home in Hawaii. A proud 2016 graduate of Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Ross has been a valued member of our clinic for the past year.
Dr. Ross has a deep passion for dogs, dog sports, and gardening. She shares her life with an amazing crew, including Yoshi, Zephyr, Zip, Jeffery, Sage, and Rance Tibary. Her commitment to veterinary care was inspired by Eric Jayne, DVM, who provided essential care in remote Alaska. Driven by this inspiration, Dr. Ross is dedicated to enhancing access to veterinary care and improving the lives of animals in her community.
