about our clinic –
Big Island pet care center

Dr. Grune, a visionary in the field of veterinary medicine, founded our clinic in 1990. Opening his own practice was the realization of his lifelong dream—to deliver the highest level of care to animals in need.

Through his clinic, Dr. Grune has surpassed his expectations and provided comprehensive and compassionate care for dogs and cats throughout Hawaii. We prioritize client education and have created a comfortable space where pets and parents feel at ease.

Our lovely clinic is located within a retrofitted house. It exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The open-air lanai serves as our waiting room, and the surrounding landscaped grounds provide a serene environment to promote relaxation for your pet.

Our hands-on approach ensures that your furry friends receive personalized attention and care. We genuinely strive for the best for your pet and aim to build lasting relationships with both pets and their devoted owners. Our dedicated veterinarians and staff are here to meet all your pet healthcare needs.

Does Your Pet Need

Veterinary Rehab?

Pet rehabilitation is a branch of veterinary medicine for supporting pets through health challenges, including but not limited to:

  • Senior/Geriatric Care: As pets age, mobility declines and pain becomes more common. Veterinary rehab supports aging pets with techniques that maintain strength and comfort.
  • Injury or Lameness: If your pet has a sprain or fracture, rehabilitation can be a part of reducing inflammation, rebuilding muscle, and restoring function.
  • Surgical Recovery: Post-operative rehab is aimed at healing your pet so that they can get back to feeling like their usual selves.
  • Non-Surgical Cruciate Disease Support: Some dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL/ACL) injuries may not need surgery. Pet rehabilitation can offer an effective non-surgical path to recovery, depending on the specifics of the injury.
  • Neurological Conditions: Pets with conditions like intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) or degenerative myelopathy benefit from targeted therapies to stay comfortable for as long as possible and, in some cases, slow the progression of your pet’s disease.

Our Veterinary Rehabilitation Services

Every therapy used at Big Island Pet Care Center can be delivered alone or combined as part of an integrative care plan. Dr. Ross evaluates each patient individually to choose the best options, such as blood work alongside acupuncture or traditional X-ray imaging and pain medication with massage therapy.

Acupuncture
By stimulating specific points on the body, pet acupuncture manages pain and promotes natural healing. Veterinary acupuncture is particularly effective for certain musculoskeletal, neurological, and chronic pain conditions.

Manual Therapies
Dr. Ross is familiar with several manual therapies for pets: chiropractic/veterinary spinal manipulation therapy, massage, and fascial release techniques. These hands-on approaches to veterinary rehabilitation restore alignment and ease muscle tension.

Laser Therapy
Laser therapy for pets is a non-invasive, high-tech treatment that uses light energy to reduce pain and improve blood flow, which is ideal for arthritis, wounds, or inflammation.

Ozone Therapy
Ozone therapy is used to increase oxygen delivery to your pet’s body, as ozone is made up of oxygen atoms. This increase in oxygen is a powerful tool for infection control, wound healing, and chronic inflammation.

Herbal Therapies
Drawing from traditional Chinese medicine and modern herbal insights, herbal formulas can address many pet health issues, from liver support to joint health.

Vitamin/Mineral Bloodwork
We can take samples for a specialized kind of bloodwork that evaluates your pet’s nutrient needs. Dr. Ross uses the results of this blood test to suggest what kind of minerals and supplements could benefit a pet’s health and recovery.

PRP & Osteoarthritis Injections
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and osteoarthritis injections support joint repair and reduce pain in pets with osteoarthritis or specific joint diseases.

Therapeutic Exercises for Pets

When humans are injured or recovering from illness, they might need physical therapy. Therapeutic exercise programs for pets are like going to a physical therapist. Veterinary exercises are used over time to restore strength and flexibility. Dr. Ross may try in-clinic exercises and/or create custom home exercise plans so you can continue your pet’s care between visits. These routines are simple, pet-friendly, and supportive of long-term progress.
